Quick verdict: is Cloudways worth it in 2026?

Cloudways is worth considering if your WordPress site has outgrown basic shared hosting and you want control over cloud resources without managing the operating system yourself. It is less compelling for a tiny first website that needs the cheapest possible hosting, email and a domain in one package.

The buying decision starts with the product: Flexible lets you choose and size a cloud server; Autonomous focuses on autoscaling WordPress hosting. They are not interchangeable plans, and their bills include different things.

This is a research-based review, not a hands-on benchmark. We checked Cloudways' pricing page and official documentation on . We have not measured its speed, uptime or support response times, and we do not assign an invented star score.

Who should buy Cloudways, and who should skip it?

Choose by your website's needs, not the hosting label
    Your situationOur recommendation
Growing WordPress business siteShortlist Flexible if you want configurable resources and can maintain WordPress.
Several client websitesConsider Flexible for staging, cloning and shared server management. Size for the combined load.
WooCommerce store with busy periodsTest real cart and checkout load. Consider Autonomous when automatic scaling is a priority.
First small blog on a very tight budgetStart by comparing simpler bundled hosting; Cloudways' extras may erase the value.
App needing root access or arbitrary system packagesChoose a different VPS or cloud arrangement. Cloudways does not provide root access.

There is no honest universal visitor limit for choosing a server. A cached blog and a membership site with logged-in users can consume very different resources at the same traffic level. Judge by what visitors do, not just monthly page views.

Our default shortlist for a steady small business site is Flexible. It exposes the resource choice directly. For a WordPress business that regularly experiences unpredictable bursts, evaluate Autonomous separately rather than assuming a larger Flexible server provides the same automatic scaling.

Both require website care: updating plugins, checking integrations and protecting account access. Autoscaling is not a replacement for good application design. Sources: product comparison and Autonomous FAQ.

Cloudways pricing: what will your monthly bill really be?

The official pricing page advertises Flexible starting at $11/month, but the DigitalOcean Premium cards displayed during our check started at $14/month. These are not the same offer. Verify the selected Standard or Premium tier, location and current checkout quote instead of assuming every entry server costs $11.

Displayed DigitalOcean Premium Flexible examples, checked October 20, 2026. USD before taxes, backup storage and add-ons; not prices for every provider.
    Displayed planMonthly priceRAM / vCPUStorage
    Micro$141 GB / 125 GB NVMe
    Small$282 GB / 150 GB NVMe
    Medium$544 GB / 280 GB NVMe

Flexible uses hourly billing, with monthly invoices for the previous month's usage. The displayed monthly figure is a comparison point, not a guarantee that every partial month, provider and add-on produces that exact bill. Cloudways lists the Micro hourly rate as $0.0208. Regional pricing, bandwidth overages and taxes can change the total. See the billing guide.

The extras you should budget for

    • Off-site backup storage: published at $0.033/GB per server on Flexible. The bill depends on backup storage, not only live website size.
    • Cloudflare Enterprise on Flexible: the pricing page lists a starting price of $4.99/domain/month.
    • Mailbox hosting: Rackspace email is listed at $1.50/mailbox/month. Transactional website email is a separate requirement.
    • Domain registration: budget for it separately. Do not assume it comes free with the server.
    • Optional maintenance and support: malware protection, Site Manager Pro and higher support tiers can add charges.

Worked example, not a quote: a displayed $28 Small server plus one $4.99 Cloudflare domain and one $1.50 mailbox totals $34.49/month before backup storage, taxes, overages and any other add-ons. The $28 headline alone would understate that setup's cost.

Do not treat pay-as-you-go as a permanent price lock. You avoid a mandatory multi-year prepayment, but provider rates, promotions and add-on prices can change. The pricing page also showed conflicting support promotion and list-price text, so we recommend getting the support quote directly rather than publishing a guaranteed discount.

Which cloud provider and server size should you start with?

Cloudways' pricing page and infrastructure guide list DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud. Availability can vary by location, account and product, so confirm the options shown in your launch screen. Autonomous does not mean choosing from the same Flexible provider menu.

For an ordinary WordPress shortlist, compare the DigitalOcean options first because the published resource cards make the initial budget easy to inspect. This is a practical starting point, not a claim that DigitalOcean is always the fastest or cheapest provider.

    • A small cached blog: test an entry-size server with your actual plugins before committing.
    • A business site or several applications: test a larger memory allocation if monitoring shows pressure. Do not add sites simply because the page says “unlimited”.
    • A store: test checkout, searches, imports and background jobs. Increase resources based on observed constraints, not a promised visitor count.
    • A geographically focused business: choose a server near the main audience; use a CDN where appropriate for distant visitors.

Several sites on one server share its resources and failure domain. A single overloaded application can affect the others. Keep critical client sites separated when isolation matters more than saving on another server.

Is Cloudways good for WordPress and WooCommerce?

The appeal is managed infrastructure with tools such as staging, cloning, SSL and caching, rather than a bundled domain-and-email package. Staging lets you check a plugin or theme change before exposing it to visitors. See our staging guide for the workflow.

Cloudways advertises Redis and Object Cache Pro, but the pricing page contains different eligibility wording: one general feature note specifies Object Cache Pro on 4 GB servers or above. Confirm inclusion for your exact tier rather than buying a 1 GB server assuming every advertised tool is available.

For WooCommerce, checkout is the deciding test

A fast cached homepage does not prove that a busy store will handle checkout. Test uncached cart and checkout requests, product search, inventory synchronisation and payment callbacks. Exclude personalised pages from inappropriate full-page caching and verify your real payment workflow on staging.

Cloudways can be a sensible upgrade if resource control solves a measured bottleneck. It will not automatically fix slow plugins, unoptimised queries or oversized images. Start with our slow WordPress troubleshooting guide before paying for a larger server.

Cloudways speed and uptime: what can we honestly conclude?

We cannot give a verified load time, uptime percentage or comparison winner because we have not run a Cloudways test site. Provider infrastructure, caching and resource controls are reasons to evaluate the platform, not measured proof that your website will be faster.

The pricing page promotes an NGINX-based Lightning Stack. Treat the promised performance benefits as Cloudways' product claims. To measure your own benefit, compare the same site, page content, plugins and test locations on your old host and trial server. Record whether each run uses a warm cache.

For Flexible, monitor CPU, memory, storage and application response before scaling. Do not assume automatic downscaling or that every provider handles a size reduction identically. Ask how an upgrade or downgrade works for the selected provider and whether a clone or migration is required.

Autonomous provides autoscaling, but plan allowances and usage charges still need monitoring. Review its official limits and billing notes. For reliability, read the applicable service terms and monitor availability over time; a short trial cannot establish an annual uptime figure.

Reserved for real measurements using the same website and test conditions. No speed or uptime result is implied by this image space.

Cloudways backups and security: useful tools, not zero responsibility

Flexible supports scheduled and on-demand backups, with configurable frequency and retention. Off-site backup storage is separately charged. Read both the backup billing rules and configuration guide, because storage usage and billing details determine the cost.

Choose a backup schedule based on how much work or order data you can afford to lose. An active shop needs a different recovery plan from a static portfolio. Perform a restore on a non-production copy before relying on backups, and keep a separate recovery copy of important content.

The platform advertises free SSL, server-level firewalls and WordPress vulnerability scanning. These do not make a site immune to attacks. Protect accounts with two-factor authentication, maintain plugins and themes, restrict permissions and check which malware protection is included versus paid. Our hosting security guide covers the broader responsibilities.

Do not apply Flexible's backup price or security add-ons to Autonomous without checking its separate inclusions.

What does Cloudways manage, and what support do you get?

Standard support is advertised as 24/7 live chat and ticketing. Cloudways also sells Advanced and Premium support with broader scope or access. Do not assume phone support, unlimited code fixes or priority troubleshooting is included in the entry plan. Read the support-tier comparison before buying for a business-critical site.

Cloudways manages the hosting platform and server stack. You still manage your website's content, plugins, themes, integrations and many application-level problems. Extra WordPress maintenance tools are not the same as a developer taking responsibility for your entire site.

There is no root access. The official policy explains this restriction. It protects the managed stack but makes Cloudways unsuitable when you need arbitrary system packages or unrestricted operating-system changes.

During the trial, ask a specific question about your application and the support plan you would buy. We have not timed support responses, so we cannot honestly call them instant or best in class.

The free trial, website migration and cancellation rules

Cloudways advertises a three-day trial without a credit card. Check the Flexible trial instructions or Autonomous trial instructions for account and resource restrictions. A card-free trial is not proof that every provider or region is eligible.

If you add a payment method, check conversion to paid service. The Autonomous trial documentation warns about automatic upgrading in that situation unless you cancel or delete the application as instructed. Do not rely on “free trial” wording alone.

The Flexible pricing page advertises a first managed website migration free. Confirm eligibility and scope using the managed migration guide; do not assume unlimited migrations or every application is free. WordPress users can also use the Cloudways Migrator plugin.

Test the migrated copy before changing DNS, including logins, forms, orders and email delivery. Keep the old hosting available until the new site works and DNS changes have settled. Follow our website migration checklist.

Do not buy on the assumption of a 30-day money-back guarantee. We did not establish a general refund window from the reviewed documentation. Confirm the applicable refund terms with Cloudways before paying. Cancellation does not erase charges already incurred.

Check how to remove chargeable servers, applications and add-ons when leaving. Merely taking a website offline is not a reliable way to end billing. Read the billing guide and verify that your account no longer shows active chargeable services.

Cloudways pros and cons, compared with the alternatives

    StrengthTrade-off
Configurable managed cloud infrastructureMore decisions and monitoring than basic shared hosting
Hourly, pay-as-you-go Flexible billingUsage, backup storage, taxes and extras affect the total

Several listed infrastructure providersNot every product or location offers the same choices
Separate WordPress autoscaling productAutonomous has its own plan allowances and cost model

Cloudways vs Hostinger: for a budget first website, compare the total cost and simplicity of Hostinger's bundled plans. Cloudways becomes more relevant when configurable resources and monthly flexibility justify the added cost. See our completed Hostinger review.

Cloudways vs SiteGround or Kinsta: compare the actual plan's support scope, included backups, traffic or resource limits and full ongoing bill. Do not choose on a headline price or an unverified speed ranking alone.

Cloudways vs an unmanaged VPS: the managed stack reduces infrastructure work but limits control. If root access is essential and you can maintain a server, an unmanaged VPS may fit better; our Hostinger VPS review explains the responsibility difference.

Before buying Cloudways: a practical trial checklist

    1. Choose the product first. Flexible for server choices; Autonomous when WordPress autoscaling is the requirement.
    2. Write down the full estimate. Include backup storage, email, CDN, taxes and paid management or support.
    3. Copy your real site. Use staging or migration, not an empty WordPress installation.
    4. Test important transactions. Check forms, logins, checkout and outgoing email alongside public page speed.
    5. Inspect resources and recovery. Review server pressure, configure backups and test a restore where possible.
    6. Confirm support and billing. Ask about your application, trial conversion and cancellation steps before adding payment details.

Our final recommendation: shortlist Cloudways for a growing WordPress business if you value resource control and can cover the complete monthly bill. Stay with simpler hosting if those benefits do not solve a real problem. Upgrade because the trial demonstrates a useful improvement, not because a review promises “unlimited” performance.

    Cloudways review: frequently asked questions

    Is Cloudways good for beginners?

It can suit a beginner willing to learn domain setup, WordPress maintenance and resource monitoring. For a first small website with a tight budget, bundled shared hosting is usually simpler. Cloudways manages infrastructure, not every part of your website.

How much does Cloudways actually cost?

The pricing page advertises Flexible from $11 per month, while its displayed DigitalOcean Premium Micro plan is $14 per month before tax. Off-site backup storage and optional services cost extra. Confirm the provider, server tier, hourly rate and add-ons in your account before purchasing.

Does Cloudways include email and a free domain?

Do not budget on a free domain or included mailboxes. Domain registration is separate. Rackspace email is a paid add-on listed at $1.50 per mailbox per month; transactional email is a separate service.

Does every Cloudways plan automatically scale?

No. Flexible offers server sizing and vertical scaling that you manage. Autonomous is the WordPress-focused autoscaling product. Its plan allowances and possible overage charges still matter.

    Are Cloudways backups free?

Flexible off-site backup storage is separately charged at the published rate of $0.033 per GB per server. Configure the schedule and retention and check the billing rules. Autonomous has different inclusions, so do not apply Flexible charges to every product.

Can I try Cloudways without a credit card?

Cloudways advertises a three-day trial without a credit card. Eligible infrastructure and account restrictions may vary. If you add a payment method, check whether your trial converts to paid service and how to cancel before it ends.

Is Cloudways faster than shared hosting?

It can provide more control over resources and caching, but that does not prove it will be faster for your website. GoodHosters has not run a controlled Cloudways comparison. Test your own pages and checkout on the trial before deciding.

Sources, methodology and what we have not tested

GoodHosters Editorial checked the official pricing page and reviewed Cloudways documentation on October 20, 2026. Our recommendations are editorial judgments based on published terms and typical website needs, not a record of using a paid Cloudways account.

Limitations: no first-hand speed, annual uptime, support timing or checkout verification is claimed. Public pricing can contain inconsistent feature or promotion wording. We flag those differences instead of silently picking the most attractive claim. Confirm the live quote and applicable terms before purchase.
