Cloudways DigitalOcean vs Vultr vs AWS: the quick answer
For a typical small business WordPress site, compare DigitalOcean first, then an equivalent Vultr configuration. Consider AWS when a specific available region or hosting requirement justifies its full quote. This is our practical buying recommendation, not proof that one provider is universally faster or more reliable.
The important purchase is the exact Cloudways configuration: provider, server family, region, RAM, CPU, storage and transfer terms. A premium cloud brand does not fix a slow plugin, guarantee fast checkout or replace sound capacity planning. If a simpler hosting plan already meets your needs, moving to managed cloud hosting may not be worth the extra work or cost.
This article compares infrastructure choices within Cloudways Flexible. Autonomous is a separate WordPress autoscaling product, not an automatic feature gained by selecting AWS. Start with our Cloudways review if you have not yet decided whether the platform itself fits.

DigitalOcean vs Vultr vs AWS on Cloudways: what actually differs?
| Choice | Why shortlist it | Main comparison | Avoid this assumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean | A practical first quote for a conventional website | Standard vs Premium, server family, region and included transfer | The lowest price suits every website |
| Vultr | An alternative configuration or location worth testing | Standard vs High Frequency, resources and transfer terms | High Frequency wins every speed test |
| AWS | A specific offered region or requirement merits comparison | Regional quote, storage, bandwidth and scaling procedure | The AWS name includes every AWS service |
Our earlier Cloudways pricing research lists DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud. This guide focuses on the three named in the title, not on every provider or family. Actual launch availability is account- and region-dependent; a public feature list is not a guarantee that your required configuration is selectable.
Cloudways provides the managed layer. The infrastructure provider still matters for the available resources, location and bill, but choosing a different provider does not automatically change Cloudways' support scope or turn it into a fully maintained website service.
DigitalOcean: a sensible first comparison for ordinary websites
DigitalOcean is our first comparison candidate when the goal is a conventional WordPress site with understandable resource and transfer allowances. That recommendation is about making a manageable shortlist, not claiming an independently established speed advantage.
Separate Standard from Premium and Basic from dedicated-resource families. Two plans with similar RAM can still differ in CPU allocation, storage technology and price. Labels such as Premium and NVMe describe aspects of the infrastructure; they do not prove that a visitor's page will load faster.
Our October 20 pricing snapshot records a displayed DigitalOcean Premium Micro configuration at $14/month with 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GB NVMe storage and 1 TB transfer. Small was $28/month with 2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50 GB storage and 2 TB transfer. These are dated reference figures, not a freshly verified checkout quote or a promise of store capacity.
Shortlist it when a suitable location and complete budget are available. Do not automatically select the 1 GB entry configuration for a shop or several busy applications. Resource monitoring and realistic tests should decide whether the chosen size has enough headroom.
Vultr: compare the actual family, not just the High Frequency label
Vultr deserves a comparison when its offered location or server configuration better matches your needs. Cloudways' earlier provider research distinguishes Standard and High Frequency options. Confirm which families remain available for your account and location instead of treating old review tables as a live catalogue.
A CPU-focused configuration can be worth testing for dynamic application work, but that is a hypothesis. The real bottleneck may be database queries, a remote API or an overloaded PHP worker pool. Faster infrastructure cannot remove time spent waiting for an external payment service.
- Match RAM, CPU allocation, storage and region as closely as possible against the alternative.
- Record the Cloudways managed price and the included transfer allowance, not the direct Vultr price.
- Use the same WordPress version, plugins, content and caching state during testing.
- Keep Vultr's own overage terms separate; do not copy a DigitalOcean transfer rate into its budget.
We do not quote a current Vultr entry price because a full live Cloudways price matrix has not been verified for this article. An incomplete table is less useful than an honest request for the exact quote.
The official Vultr High Frequency guide is the product-specific reference for this family. Compare its features and current availability rather than treating High Frequency as equivalent to DigitalOcean Premium or AWS Compute Optimized.
AWS: choose it for a requirement, not a prestige upgrade
AWS is worth examining if a region or configuration offered through Cloudways answers a specific business requirement. First establish that the required option exists in Cloudways. Direct AWS documentation about a service or region does not establish availability through this managed hosting product.
Cloudways on AWS is not the same purchase as operating your own unrestricted AWS environment. Do not assume root access, arbitrary system packages, your own AWS account integration or access to every AWS service. If the project needs a particular network connection, service integration or architecture, get a compatibility answer before committing.
Pay particular attention to the selected region's price, storage configuration and transfer billing. A lower server headline can be misleading if the bill changes significantly with outbound traffic. Equally, AWS is not automatically poor value when it meets a requirement that another offered configuration does not.
For a simple blog without a specific AWS need, we would not pay extra solely for the brand. For a complex application, Cloudways' managed-stack limits may matter more than the choice of infrastructure. Check the support scope and compare alternative hosting arrangements if system-level control is essential.
How to compare the complete monthly cost
Build three comparable quotes, not three provider-name prices. Record the same workload assumptions and include recurring costs that are easy to overlook.
| Budget line | What to record |
|---|---|
| Server | Cloudways provider, region, family, resources and hourly/monthly quote |
| Storage and transfer | Included allowances, expected usage and applicable overage rate |
| Backup storage | Flexible off-site usage, retention and billing rules |
| Optional services | CDN, mailboxes, transactional delivery and paid support |
| Transition and operations | Overlapping servers, maintenance, licences and tax |
Dated transfer reference: our October 20 pricing guide records DigitalOcean overage at $0.02/GB and AWS at $0.12/GB from Cloudways' pricing FAQ. Reconfirm the current regional terms and allowances. Those rates are not a new quote, and they should not be applied to Vultr by assumption.
Illustrative arithmetic only: if a quote bills 100 GB above its included transfer allowance at $0.02/GB, that line costs $2. At $0.12/GB, the same billable excess costs $12. This does not mean identical total traffic creates identical excess on both providers; their included allowances may differ.
The Cloudways bandwidth guide provides a more specific Vultr distinction: $0.01/GB above the allowance in North America and Western Europe, $0.025/GB in Singapore and Tokyo, and $0.05/GB in Sydney. Those are documented regional overage rates, not server prices or a universal rate for every location. For AWS, the guide describes usage-based transfer; verify the applicable calculation for your selected region.
Also compare monthly versus hourly billing. Cloudways documents monthly caps for DigitalOcean and Vultr with different treatment for AWS. Do not assume multiplying every provider's hourly headline by the same number gives the final invoice.
Flexible off-site backup storage was listed at $0.033/GB per server in our earlier research. Check the backup billing documentation rather than equating website disk size with the exact billed backup amount. For a worked server-plus-add-ons budget, use our full Cloudways pricing guide.
Do not subtract a temporary offer from every future month. Our Cloudways promo guide explains why eligibility and the regular ongoing bill need separate checks.

Location and performance: how to compare without inventing a winner
We have not benchmarked these three Cloudways configurations. There is no first-hand speed league table, uptime score or checkout-capacity claim here. Provider marketing and isolated third-party tests do not establish how your own website performs.
Start with a region reasonably close to your main visitors and test from their locations. A CDN can help suitable cached content, but uncached account pages, checkout requests and application APIs can still depend on the origin. Check where the database and external integrations sit as well.
- Copy the same application into authorised isolated environments and keep software and cache settings equivalent.
- Test cached public pages separately from uncached application requests.
- Measure time to first byte, full page experience, errors and response-time distributions across repeated runs.
- For stores, test carts, search and checkout safely with payment gateways in test mode.
- Inspect CPU, memory and database pressure alongside the results; do not compare only a single fast page load.
Label a future result with its date, region, family, resource allocation, application setup and test method. A short controlled comparison can inform a purchase; it cannot prove annual uptime or guarantee future peak traffic. See our WordPress review for caching and application-level checks.

Scaling up, scaling down and moving to another provider
Before selecting a provider, ask what happens when you need more capacity and when that demand disappears. Increasing RAM or CPU is not necessarily reversible in the same way as changing a subscription tier. Disk size and provider-specific rules can affect the downgrade path.
Get the current procedure for the exact family: whether a resize requires interruption, whether storage can be reduced, whether CPU or RAM can scale down independently, and whether a move to a smaller server is needed. Do not schedule a change immediately before a sale without a tested recovery plan.
Cloudways' server-scaling guide focuses on scaling up. Its server-cloning guide identifies moving to a smaller server as a cloning use case. These are useful starting points, not proof that every provider supports the same in-place downgrade or that cloning is always the only option.
Changing infrastructure providers should be planned as a move to another server, not assumed to be an in-place switch. Confirm Cloudways' supported clone or migration workflow, available destination size and location, application compatibility and cutover steps.
- Budget for both servers while the destination is tested; inspect the billing guide before deleting the source.
- Check the destination IP, DNS, SSL, cron jobs, sending services and external allowlists.
- For live stores, plan final order and stock synchronisation before changing DNS.
- Retain a tested rollback path until the new environment is stable.
The website migration checklist covers the broader cutover. A provider change is not a promise of zero downtime or zero data loss. Flexible resizing is also not the same as Autonomous's separate autoscaling model.
Which provider should you choose for your website?
| Website | Our starting shortlist | What decides the purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Small WordPress business site | DigitalOcean, then equivalent Vultr | Suitable location, full bill, compatibility and resource headroom |
| Dynamic WordPress or membership site | Matched DigitalOcean and Vultr families | Uncached performance, database work and worker pressure |
| Growing WooCommerce store | Any suitable configuration proven in store testing | Checkout correctness, peak demand, recovery and maintenance |
| Project with a specific offered AWS requirement | AWS alongside alternatives that meet the requirement | Verified compatibility and complete regional cost |
| Agency hosting multiple sites | Configurations meeting isolation and management needs | Resource contention, client separation and per-site extras |
For WooCommerce, read our store-hosting guide. The cheapest eligible server is not automatically a responsible choice for checkout. Likewise, several quiet sites can share resources, but one demanding application can affect the others.
If you cannot assign responsibility for updates, testing and incidents, choose an arrangement with the maintenance you actually need. Cloudways' infrastructure management is not a blanket promise to maintain custom plugins, integrations or business processes.
Seven checks before launching a Cloudways server
- Confirm that the desired provider, region and family are selectable in your account.
- Record the complete regular quote, not just an introductory headline.
- Check storage, transfer, backups and any services billed separately.
- Confirm trial eligibility for the actual configuration through the Flexible trial guide; do not assume every provider is trial-eligible.
- Test your real application and critical workflows in an isolated environment.
- Agree on resizing, downgrade, recovery and migration procedures.
- Assign ongoing monitoring and website maintenance before going live.
Our final advice: start with a small, relevant shortlist. Prefer the configuration that meets your workload at an acceptable ongoing cost. Pay more only when testing or a verified requirement explains the benefit, not because a brand name sounds more enterprise-ready.

Cloudways DigitalOcean vs Vultr vs AWS FAQ
Which Cloudways provider should a small WordPress website choose?
Our starting recommendation is to compare an appropriately sized DigitalOcean configuration in a suitable region with an equivalent Vultr option. Choose from the complete quote and a test of the real website. This is editorial advice, not a measured performance ranking.
Is Vultr High Frequency faster than DigitalOcean Premium?
This guide does not establish a speed winner. Server families differ, and performance also depends on location, application code, caching and resource pressure. Compare equivalent configurations using the same website and testing method.
Is AWS on Cloudways the same as managing an AWS account directly?
No. You are buying Cloudways' managed hosting offering on AWS infrastructure. Do not assume full AWS service access, root access, your own AWS account integration or the same prices as a direct AWS purchase. Confirm any required integration before buying.
Does choosing AWS automatically make Cloudways autoscale?
No. This comparison concerns Cloudways Flexible server configurations. Cloudways Autonomous is a separate WordPress autoscaling product. Do not infer autoscaling from the underlying cloud provider's name.
Can I change the provider of an existing Cloudways server?
Plan a move to a new destination server rather than assuming an in-place provider switch. Confirm the supported cloning or migration workflow, destination capacity, IP and DNS changes, temporary duplicate charges and application checks before the cutover.
Are raw DigitalOcean, Vultr and AWS prices valid Cloudways quotes?
No. Direct infrastructure prices and Cloudways managed-service prices describe different purchases. Use the Cloudways quote for the selected provider, region, family and size, then add applicable backup storage, transfer, add-ons and tax.
Which provider is best for WooCommerce?
No provider name establishes checkout capacity. Test uncached browsing, cart and checkout work with the actual extensions, and compare database and resource pressure. Choose a configuration with suitable headroom and a safe recovery plan.
